Some fishermen in Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam saved an elderly American man after the mast of his ship was broken while he was sailing from Luzon Island off the Philippines to the south-central Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa Province on Monday.

A border guard in Quang Ngai Province said on Tuesday that the Sa Huynh border guard unit had admitted the American man, who was on board a ship in the waters off Vietnam, as his vessel did not work.

Fisherman Truong Khac Huy, the captain of a fishing boat, recounted that his boat was hunting sea creatures in the waters off Quang Ngai Province, some 45 nautical miles from the mainland, when he and other fishermen discovered a ship moving abnormally at 3:00 pm on Monday.

A fisherman saw an elderly man on board the troubled ship sending a signal for help, so Huy quickly steered their boat to the man, who was in stable condition.

The fishing boat then pulled the man’s ship into Sa Huynh Port and handed it over to the Sa Huynh border guard unit in Duc Pho Town.

The man was identified as Quinn Richard Anthony, a 75-year-old American, and had his health checked at the unit.

Anthony said that he set sail from Luzon Island off the Philippines for Khanh Hoa Province for travel on April 5.

Due to bad weather conditions, the mast of his vessel and its engine were broken, he said, adding that after several days of floating in the water, he luckily met the Vietnamese fishing boat on Monday.

“The Vietnamese fishermen and border guards are very kind. I was so lucky to get such valuable assistance. Thank you, Vietnam,” he expressed his gratitude.

His ship is docking at a port before the border guard unit, undergoing a repair.

Anthony said that he had bought the vessel in the Philippines, and used a nautical chart to travel to Vietnam for exploration and sightseeing.
