The administration in Tay Ho District, Hanoi plans to relocate and enlarge the memorial for late U.S. Senator John McCain, currently located on the edge of Truc Bach Lake.
The planned relocation and expansion aim to preserve historic and cultural values while creating a suitable space to enhance the spiritual life of local residents.
The district plans to move the memorial back close to the handrail of Truc Bach Lake to make the space in front of it larger, thus facilitating the organization of events.
The memorial will also be made bigger, with its foundation including a space to put flowers.
The district will repave the area surrounding the memorial to separate its vicinity from sidewalks, rearrange tree pots, and add an information board together with a lighting system.
The project requires an estimated investment of over VND1.9 trillion (US$74,303), sourced from the coffers of Tay Ho District.
On October 26, 1967, Vietnam’s military forces shot McCain’s plane down during the American war in Vietnam.
McCain parachuted from the plane and landed near Truc Bach Lake before being captured there.
The memorial was erected to commemorate the event.
Senator McCain died of brain cancer on August 25, 2018, at the age of 81.
At the time, many residents in Hanoi paid tribute to McCain and laid flowers at Truc Bach Lake.
During his 60 years of political career, McCain spent nearly three decades contributing to the normalization and development of the Vietnam- U.S. relations.
He claimed that Vietnam had greatly influenced his life and given him some of the most important lessons.
After the war, he returned to Vietnam on multiple occasions, saying that he increasingly loved the people and landscapes there.
