The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has proposed that the Ministry of Transport consider the construction of the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, featuring an 80m x 15m clearance and six lanes, at a total cost of approximately VND4.8 trillion (US$191.2 million).
According to the prime minister’s decision issued in 2013 on Ho Chi Minh City’s transport development to 2020 and beyond, the four-lane Thu Thiem 4 Bridge would connect District 7 and District 2 (now Thu Duc City).
However, a consulting unit’s research showed that the bridge should have six lanes to match expected traffic volume by 2050, ensuring the project’s effectiveness.
Inland waterway vehicles operating on the Saigon River have a capacity of 120-1,000 passengers each and a height of up to 12 meters, according to the Ho Chi Minh City administration.
Enterprises tend to operate restaurant vessels with an increasing capacity on the river.
The consulting unit proposed developing the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge and approach roads with a length of 2.16 kilometers, with the bridge alone being over 1.6 kilometers long.
The bridge will have six lanes, including four lanes for autos and two mixed lanes.
Thu Thiem 4 will be developed as a fixed bridge, not a vertical-lift bridge as earlier planned.
