Power has been restored to 4.2 million of the more than 5.7 million households and establishments affected by typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam, while 1.5 million were still without electricity as of Monday morning, according to state utility EVN.

Typhoon Yagi, which has wreaked havoc on northern Vietnam since Saturday, has caused severe damage to the power grid system.

In the high-voltage grid, seven out of nine damaged 500kV lines have been restored, 27 out of 40 damaged 220kV lines are back in operation, and 77 out of 102 damaged 110kV lines have been repaired.

For the medium and low-voltage grids, strong storm winds have caused significant issues.

Many distribution lines and transformer stations across northern provinces and cities have been damaged, leading to power supply interruptions and widespread outages.

On Monday morning, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper observed that power workers were still busy repairing, replacing, and rebuilding power lines ravaged by the typhoon in Hai Phong City.

On Sunday, the Northern Power Corporation had deployed 38 additional shock teams comprising 413 staff and technical workers from 13 affiliated units to assist with power grid repairs in Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong City.

Hoang Huu Truong, chief of office of EVN Hai Phong, informed Tuoi Tre that many electric poles remain broken in the city’s suburbs.

Efforts to restore power are ongoing with support from EVN teams from several provinces, including Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, and Tuyen Quang.

Truong noted that the recovery effort is challenged by the extensive debris from fallen trees blocking power lines and poles, which requires significant time to clear and repair.

He added that some damaged transformer stations were repaired on Sunday and expects that most power lines with broken poles and wires will be fixed by the end of Monday, though the exact number of damaged sites in Hai Phong is still being assessed.

In Hanoi, the Hanoi Power Corporation reported that the powerful storm has affected 290,000 households and establishments, primarily in suburban districts.

Nearly all of those affected have had their power restored.
