Typhoon Krathon intensified and entered the northeastern waters of the East Vietnam Sea in the early hours of Tuesday, making it the fifth storm to affect the maritime area this year.

The typhoon is not expected to impact the country’s coastal and mainland areas, said the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

By 10:00 am on Tuesday, Krathon was spotted in the northeastern part of the East Vietnam Sea, packing maximum sustained winds of 201 kilometers per hour near its center.

It was traveling west-northwest at approximately five kilometers per hour.

In the following 24 hours, it could mainly move north-northeast at some five kilometers per hour.

By 10:00 am on Wednesday, the system will likely remain in the northeastern part of the East Vietnam Sea and could be some 110 kilometers south-southwest of Taiwan.

Over the next two days, Krathon is forecast to march northeast at approximately 10 kilometers per hour, gradually weakening and approaching the coast of Taiwan.

The typhoon may continue to weaken while maintaining the same direction and speed by 10:00 am on Friday. At that time, it could be centered in the northeastern waters of Taiwan.

The weather agency warned all vessels operating in the northeastern part of the East Vietnam Sea of strong winds, high waves of 7-9 meters, and extremely rough seas due to the impact of the storm.

On Sunday afternoon, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent a dispatch to relevant ministries, agencies, and authorities of the coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Binh Dinh, asking them to keep a close watch on the developments of the storm; to notify captains and owners of fishing boats of the inclement weather conditions; and to stay ready for rescue operations.
