A heavy rain, coupled with high tides, seriously flooded several streets in Bac Lieu City under the namesake province in southern Vietnam on Saturday afternoon.
Up to 221 mm of rain lashed the city, leaving Tran Phu, Vo Thi Sau, Hoa Binh, Ba Trieu, Ton Duc Thang, Hoang Van Thu and Hoang Dieu streets submerged in 30-50 centimeters of water.
Some low-lying areas were up to 80 centimeters under water.
Many vehicles broke down as their wheels were half submerged in water.
Heavy flooding hit Tran Phu Street, trapping several cars, while the deluge also caused heavy flooding on Ton Duc Thang Street, sinking the chairs of some coffee shops along the sidewalk.
Rainfall at a station in Ward 8 measured 221.4 mm at 6:00 pm the same day.
Floodwaters were expected to recede slowly, so local authorities mapped out a plan to open or close Nha Mat sluice gate appropriately to prevent the flooding from worsening.
