A five-year-old girl in Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam was mauled to death by her family’s two German shepherds on Wednesday night.

An official from the People’s Committee of the province's Vinh Tuong District confirmed the death to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday evening.

The victim, identified as P.D.M., a 5-year-old resident of Vinh Son Commune, was playing outside her home at 7:40 pm on Wednesday when her family’s two domestic German shepherds suddenly attacked her, biting her neck and abdomen.

“The incident happened when her parents were not at home. The two dogs escaped from their cage and then mauled the girl,” the official recounted.

The girl was hospitalized but eventually succumbed to her injuries.

The official said that local authorities have repeatedly called on residents to cage their dogs and avoid allowing them to roam freely.
