Passengers of Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro Line No. 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, which is set to start commercial operations on December 22, will be entitled to free rides during the first 30 days of its service.
The municipal People’s Council on Wednesday approved a resolution on support policies for users of the metro line and feeder bus routes.
The move was made to show the city’s gratitude to local residents for supporting the metro project by handing over land for it and sharing the difficulties during its execution.
The policy will also create conditions for local residents to experience the first metro line in the city and encourage them to develop the habit of using public transport instead of personal vehicles.
According to the resolution, five groups of passengers will benefit from the policy, including individuals recognized for meritorious service, people with disabilities, senior citizens, children under six, and passengers who use the metro service and take buses connecting to the metro line.
In particular, individuals recognized for meritorious service, people with disabilities, senior citizens, children under six are entitled to free bus and metro services across the city.

The city will provide financial aid for metro and bus operations to cover revenue shortfalls from ticket sales and other costs.
The inaugural metro line is 19.7 kilometers long, including 2.6 kilometers of underground urban rail link and 17.1 kilometers of elevated track, carrying a price tag of VND43.7 trillion ($1.7 billion).
The line has a total of 17 trains, each capable of accommodating 930 passengers, including 147 sitting and 783 standing.
The first metro line project was launched in 2006, and its construction began in 2012.
The 17 feeder bus routes connecting to the metro line will be operated by Phuong Trang Futabuslines Passenger Car Corporation.
