Surgeons at Thanh Hoa General Hospital in Thanh Hoa Province, located in north-central Vietnam, successfully removed a 14-centimeter-long worm from the conjunctiva of a patient’s left eye, a doctor said on Tuesday.
This was a rare case in the ophthalmology field.
The patient, N.N.B., a 68-year-old resident of Sam Son City, was admitted to the hospital with irritation and discomfort in her left eye.
Her symptoms included a gritty sensation, redness, excessive tearing, and itchiness.
During an examination, doctors discovered a 14-centimeter-long, 0.5-millimeter-wide worm-like parasite moving beneath the conjunctiva of her eye.
The parasite was promptly removed, and the patient experienced immediate relief following the procedure.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai from the ophthalmology department of the hospital explained that after worm larvae take hold in humans, they move through the body and settle in any organ, eventually causing pain and discomfort.
Residents are advised to wash their hands before meals and after having direct contact with animals.
She also advised everyone to refrain from fresh food such as tiet canh (blood soup), goi ca (raw fish salad), and uncooked vegetables, and to ensure that their water comes from a safe source.
People should periodically deworm their pets to prevent parasites and worms from infecting humans.
