Health experts anticipated that a dengue outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City this year may start earlier than in 2024 due to a significant surge in infections.

According to data from the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control, during the first seven weeks of 2025, the city has recorded 3,431 cases of dengue fever, marking a 125-percent year-on-year increase and a 49-percent rise compared to the 2022–24 average.

The weekly case counts to date have consistently exceeded both the figures from 2024 and the three-year average. This trend raises serious concerns that an outbreak could occur earlier than usual this year.

In response to the growing risk, the city has implemented a series of preventive measures to control and curb the spread of the disease.

Alongside routine activities such as surveillance, case and outbreak investigations, and monitoring of serology and disease-carrying mosquitoes, the city is intensifying its surveillance and management of high-risk areas.

Across various districts, community health workers are actively engaged in surveillance, prevention communication, and assisting local authorities in disease control.

The municipal Department of Health has urged district-level authorities, including Thu Duc City, to strictly enforce public health regulations, ensuring compliance with mosquito control efforts.

Starting next month, the southern metropolis will launch a large-scale mosquito larvae elimination campaign, as directed by the Pasteur Institute.

The initiative will focus on environmental sanitation to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds in high-risk areas and targeted insecticide spraying in outbreak-prone localities.

The Pasteur Institute also stressed the importance of closely monitoring the epidemic, swiftly containing outbreaks, and providing comprehensive training for healthcare facilities.
