Traffic at the southern gateways of Hanoi surged on Saturday morning as people returned to hometowns for the nine-day Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) holiday, causing difficulty with travel.
Congestion began at 8:00 am and showed no signs of easing by 12:00 pm.
The drizzle worsened traffic, causing congestion around the Ring Road 3 area.
Many elevated roads saw long lines of cars stretching for kilometers.
At the Giai Phong-Ngoc Hoi intersection heading toward National Highway 1, local congestion persisted for hours.
Traffic police reported that congestion began on Friday, the last working day before the holiday, and is expected to ease by Saturday, four days prior to Tet, as fewer vehicles head toward the city’s gateways.
Public workers are slated to return to work on February 3.
