Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has directed that Phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport, a key national project in southern Dong Nai Province, be substantially completed by December 31, 2025, earlier than the previous deadline of 2026.

This directive was issued during his inspection visit to the airport's construction site and associated transport projects on Thursday. This marked the seventh time the Prime Minister has directly inspected and provided guidance on this project.

Long Thanh International Airport's Phase 1 has a total investment of approximately VND109 trillion (US$4.6 billion), which commenced in 2020 and was initially scheduled for completion in 2026.

The first phase of the Long Thanh International Airport project comprises four component projects.

Component Project 1 involves constructing facilities for management agencies, such as offices for aviation authorities, customs, immigration, police, animal and plant quarantine units, and other relevant bodies, according to the Vietnam Government Portal (VGP).

Component Project 2 focuses on facilities serving air traffic management, including the air traffic control tower and specialized equipment, while Component Project 3 encompasses essential airport facilities, accounting for most of the project's total investment.

The final component project includes areas designated for in-flight catering, aircraft cleaning and maintenance, and ground service vehicle maintenance.

Upon completion, Phase 1 will have a capacity to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million metric tons of cargo annually.

During discussions with ministries, sectors, contractors, and local authorities at the construction site, PM Chinh emphasized the need for all stakeholders to overcome difficulties and expedite their work to ensure Phase 1 is completed by December 31.

He stressed that all parties involved must adhere to their specific progress timelines to meet the overall deadline and warned that any individuals failing to meet their commitments would be held accountable and replaced.

The Long Thanh International Airport project has a total estimated investment of over VND336.63 trillion (approximately $13.15 billion), with construction divided into three phases.

Upon completion of the third phase, the airport is expected to handle 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo annually.
