No fixing in Vietnam-Malaysia semi at Suzuki Cup: police

No fixing in Vietnam-Malaysia semi at Suzuki Cup: police

Vietnamese police have said that they had discovered no rigging sign in the return game between Vietnam and Malaysia at the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup semifinals earlier this month.Lieutenant General Tran Trong Luong, deputy chief of a general police department under the Ministry of Public Security, confirmed the information on Friday and added that his agency has stopped investigating the case.

Before, Sportradar – a partner of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) and supplier of betting-related data services – had said it found no sign in the betting markets to prove that the Vietnam-Malaysia match on December 11 in Hanoi was fixed.

The security service did not observe any suspicious betting patterns in any of the pre-match or live betting markets, the AFF confirmed on its official website, quoting the conclusion of Sportradar. Although Malaysia recorded a surprising victory in the return game to advance to the finale, Sportradar can find no betting evidence to suggest that this match was targeted for manipulation, the AFF partner added in its conclusion.

Vietnam beat Malaysia 2-1 in the semifinal first leg on December 7 in Kuala Lumpur but surprisingly lost 2-4 to them in Hanoi.

After the humiliating loss, public opinion in Vietnam had it that the Vietnamese defenders might have thrown the match and local police launched a probe into the allegation.

The AFF Suzuki Cup 2014 was co-hosted by Singapore and Vietnam from November 22 to December 20, with Thailand capturing the title after beating Malaysia 4-3 on aggregate.
