The six-member Team Vietnam has left the 2016 Asian Swimming Championships, which concluded on Sunday in Japan, with one gold and three bronze medals, all snatched by the country’s No.1 swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien.
During the final competition day in Tokyo, Vien grabbed two bronze medals in the women’s 800m freestyle and 200m individual medley events, clocking 8:38.21 and 2:12.95, respectively.
The 20-year-old swimmer had earlier secured the 400m individual medley gold by touching the wall at 4:37.71, breaking the championship's old record of 4:41.29, and later bagged the 200m freestyle bronze in a time of 1:59.31.
Other Vietnamese athletes at the event were female swimmers Tran Ngoc Thi and Vu Thi Phuong Anh and male teammates Tran Duy Khoi, Lam Quang Nhat and Le Nguyen Paul, who were all unable to bring home a medal at the competition.
Despite her medal haul, Vien failed to improve on her personal best times in her strongest events.
For example, Vien won the 200m individual medley in a time of 2:12.95, which is still behind her best of 2:12.33, which secured her bronze at the FINA World Cup in Russia in 2015.
Similarly, Vien’s 200m freestyle performance in Japan was slower than the 1:59.27 she achieved at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, which smashed the championship record and earned her a gold medal.
Additionally, the 400m individual medley record Vien set at the Asian championship was not her best, after the Vietnamese swimming star finished the event at the Rio 2016 Olympics in just 4:36.85.
The 2016 Asian Swimming Championships, now in its 10th edition, ran from November 17 to 20 at the Tatsumi International Swimming Center in Tokyo.
