A Vietnamese female boxer has beaten a Philippine-Australian opponent, who had won women’s international boxing titles for several times, at a friendly competition in Ho Chi Minh City.
Nguyen Thi Thu Nhi defeated Gretchen Abaniel at the Victory8 boxing tournament on Saturday and pocketed VND400 million ($17,058).
A friendly tourney, Victory8 was organized by the Vietnam Boxing Federation and featured eight matches, including two for women boxers.
The boxers are both amateur and professional from Vietnam and Australia.
A fight included four rounds, each lasting three minutes for men and two minutes for women.
Nhi was the underdog in her showdown with Abaniel, who had had 18 wins under her belt and claimed the WIBA Women's International Boxing Association Minimumweight title (2009, 2014, 2016) as well as the WBC International female minimumweight title (2007).
But the Vietnamese boxer fought quite equally against her rival before the 22-year-old host garnered a narrow win on points at Nguyen Du Sports Center in District 1.
