Huynh Nhu, skipper of the Vietnam women’s national football team, received her fifth Vietnam Golden Ball, becoming the most-awarded female player in the 27-year history of the award, on Saturday evening.

Last year, Nhu reached the record for the most Golden Ball awards won by a female player, previously held by Doan Thi Kim Chi and Pham Thanh Luong, who also claimed four awards in the male category.

The female striker, now playing for Portugal’s Lank FC, was earlier named the Vietnam Golden Ball winner in 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

In 2022, she helped Ho Chi Minh City FC secure a double win at the national championship and national cup.

She was captain of the national team that won the 2021 Southeast Asian Games gold medal and is poised to make a debut at the World Cup.

She also became the first Vietnamese female footballer to play abroad.

The striker moved to Lank FC last August and made a dream start with six goals and two assists, the second-highest scorer on her team.

In the men’s category, forward Nguyen Van Quyet of Hanoi FC secured the honor for the second time after the first in 2020.

In the 2022 football season, Quyet shone in the domestic league with nine goals.

He captained Hanoi FC to a hat-trick of titles, winning the V-League 1, National Cup, and National Super Cup.

He received the MVP of the V-League 1 award.

On the national level, he took a silver medal with Vietnam at the AFF Cup 2022.

The Silver Ball awards for male and female footballers went to striker Nguyen Tien Linh of Becamex Binh Duong FC and midfielder Tran Thi Thuy Trang of Ho Chi Minh City FC, respectively.

Viettel FC midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc, last year’s male Golden Ball winner, and midfielder Nguyen Bich Thuy of Ho Chi Minh City FC received the Bronze Ball honor.

For futsal players, goalkeeper Ho Van Y of Thai Son Nam FC won his second Golden Ball in a row.

Khong Dinh Hung of Sahako FC and Chau Doan Phat of Thai Son Nam grabbed the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively.

Khuat Van Khang of Viettel and Vu Thi Hoa of Hanoi were honored as the best young male and female players of the year.

Jamaican forward Rimario Gordon of Becamex Binh Duong was the best foreign player of 2022.

The Golden Ball title was first given in 1995 to the nation’s best male player by Sai Gon Giai Phong (Liberated Saigon) newspaper.

It was later open to women, young men, and young women along with foreign footballers and futsal players.
