Le Thi Mong Tuyen has secured Vietnam’s fourth spot at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris thanks to a standout performance at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship 2024 in Indonesia.
Tuyen scored 627.8 points in the qualifying round of the women’s 10m air rifle event at the Asian tournament, earning her a spot in the final.
Her teammate, Phi Thanh Thao, scored 625.2 points, putting her in the 26th position and ending her run at the competition.
With five athletes among the eight finalists already having qualified for the Paris Olympics, Tuyen needed to outgun Amini Pozveh of Iran and Huiyi Tan of Singapore for one of the two available Olympic berths.
Under coach Nguyen Duy Hoang’s guidance, Tuyen finished in fourth place overall with a score of 125.9, officially securing herself a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scheduled for July 26 to August 11.
It also makes Tuyen the second Vietnamese shooter and the country's fourth athlete to have booked a spot in the 2024 Olympics.
Earlier, Trinh Thu Vinh won a ticket to the Games after achieving a fifth-place finish in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the 2023 ISSF World Shooting Championships in Azerbaijan last August.
Cyclist Nguyen Thi That and swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang have also qualified for the Games.
The ongoing Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship, which serves as the Asian zonal Olympic qualification, features competitions across 18 classes for men and 14 for women, including four mixed teams.
Junior athletes have the opportunity to showcase their talents in eight individual and team classes.
Prior to the tournament, Vietnam's head coach Park Chung Gun selected the country’s top 11 athletes to undergo a two-week training course in Jakarta, paving the way for their participation in the event, which is set to last until January 18.
On Tuesday, the duo Pham Quang Huy and Trinh Thu Vinh won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the tournament.
