Vietnamese billiard player Tran Duc Minh, ranked 250th globally, claimed the champion title at the Ho Chi Minh City World Cup 3-Cushion 2024 after securing a stunning victory against his South Korean opponent Kim Jun Tae, ranked fourth worldwide, in the final match on Sunday evening.

Minh’s appearance in the final came as a complete surprise since he was underestimated prior to the tournament.

His composure along with his wealth of experience enabled Minh to outplay many big names in the field to make it to the final round.

Kim Jun Tae, meanwhile, is a noted player in the world.

Despite the disparity in their skills, none of them staged a dominant performance in the finale.

Minh even started off the game quite better than Kim with a score of 21-8.

Kim managed to maintain his perfect composure to narrow down the gap to 20-33.

At that time, Minh gave his impressive performance by scoring seven consecutive points to change the scoreboard to 41-20 and then 45-31.

Kim later fought back to close the gap to 43-45 by scoring 12 consecutive points before taking the upper hand with a score of 46-45.

But Kim seemed to lose his concentration in the end, prompting Minh to outperform his Korean opponent to claim a breathtaking victory of 50-46.

The Korean poolplayer, meanwhile, had entered the World Cup finals many times but missed the chance to win the title.
