Thai attacking midfielder Supachok Sarachat’s controversial goal against Vietnam in the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Championship final last Sunday is currently leading the fan vote for Best Goal of the tournament.
The poll, which opened on the official 2024 ASEAN Championship website on Tuesday morning, has already received 7,811 votes for 10 shortlisted goals by 4:00 pm on the same day.
According to the poll results at the time, Supachok Saracha’s goal against Vietnam on Sunday night dominated the voting with 81.41 percent.
In contrast, Vietnamese striker Nguyen Xuan Son’s goal in the first leg of the final on January 2 at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho Province, northern Vietnam garnered just 18.13 percent of the total votes.
The remaining goals were trailing significantly behind, with Shawal Anuar’s strike for Singapore against Thailand at 0.22 percent, Joao Pedro’s goal for Timor-Leste against Malaysia at 0.1 percent, Bjorn Martin Kristensen’s effort for the Philippines against Thailand at 0.05 percent, and Faris Ramli's goal for Singapore against Thailand at 0.04 percent.
Sandro Reyes' goal for the Philippines against Thailand, Abdel Kader Coulibaly's volley for Cambodia against Thailand, and Syafiq Ahmad's goal for Malaysia against Timor-Leste each earned just 0.03 percent, 0.01 percent, and 0.01 percent, respectively.
With these voting trends, Supachok’s goal is poised to be named the Best Goal of the 2024 ASEAN Championship.
The number of votes supporting his strike continues to grow rapidly, as Vietnamese fans have been actively campaigning for it across various football forums in a seemingly mocking fashion.
The goal followed a throw-in, after which midfielder Ben Davis passed to Supachok.
From about 25 meters out, Supachok unleashed a powerful shot that beat Vietnamese goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu, giving Thailand a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute of the return game.

However, the goal sparked controversy, as Vietnamese players argued that either Davis or Supachok should have returned the ball to Vietnam out of sportsmanship, rather than continuing with an attack.
Goalie Dinh Trieu had thrown the ball out of bounds to allow treatment for an injured Vietnamese player.
Despite the unfair goal, Vietnam ultimately triumphed 3-2 in the second leg, securing a 5-3 aggregate victory to claim the 2024 ASEAN Championship, officially known as the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 for sponsorship reasons.
