The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the country’s state-run airports operator, has announced a major investment of nearly VND1 trillion (US$39 million) to upgrade Vinh International Airport in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam this year, with three key projects aimed at improving its runways, terminals, and apron.
ACV chairman Vu The Phiet discussed the planned upgrades of the airport during a working session with the Nghe An People’s Committee on Thursday.
As per the plan, ACV will expand the airport apron to accommodate nine aircraft parking positions, with construction expected to commence before April 30 and conclude by December 2025. This project carries a price tag of VND236.63 billion ($9.3 million).
Renovations to the existing passenger terminal T1 are also slated to begin before April 30 and finish by the end of the year.
With a budget of VND68.36 billion ($2.7 million), the upgraded terminal will handle 3-3.5 million passengers annually by 2030.
The most significant undertaking is the runway repair, budgeted at over VND623 billion ($24.4 million).
This project involves repairing the 2,400-meter runway, taxiways, and safety areas.
Construction is scheduled to start before June 30, requiring the airport's closure, with operations resuming by December 31.
To ensure smooth implementation, ACV has requested the Nghe An People’s Committee to expedite land clearance procedures and facilitate access to construction materials.
Chairman of the Nghe An administration Le Hong Vinh emphasized the importance of the runway upgrades, pledging local authorities’ support to accelerate legal approvals and minimize airport closure time.
These upgrades are crucial for meeting the growing travel demand in central Vietnam and supporting Nghe An's economic growth.
ACV is committed to completing all three projects by December 30, 2025.
Further discussions at the meeting included extending the runway by 600 meters in the future to accommodate larger aircraft, facilitating long-haul flights and boosting the airport's capacity.
