Vietnam has witnessed a 27.6-percent decrease in traffic violations after two months of enforcing Government Decree 168, which introduced stricter penalties for traffic offenses and took effect on January 1, 2025.

Between January 1 and February 28, traffic police across the country handled 504,514 violations, revoked nearly 38,760 driver’s licenses, deducted points from more than 48,690 licenses, and impounded almost 146,500 vehicles, according to data from the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of violations decreased by 192,221 cases, or 27.6 percent.

Notably, alcohol-related violations totaled nearly 105,890 cases, a 45.9-percent decline. Speeding violations dropped 27 percent to around 120,400 cases, while cases of overloading and illegal vehicle modifications fell by more than 50 percent.

The stricter enforcement has also contributed to a decline in traffic accidents.

During the two-month period, the country reported 2,895 road accidents that killed 1,582 people and injured 2,003, all down over 33 percent, 13 percent, and 42 percent, respectively, against the same period last year.

A representative from the Traffic Police Department attributed the positive trend to increased public awareness and compliance with traffic laws.

Authorities plan to intensify patrols and strictly enforce regulations, particularly focusing on six major traffic violation categories that contribute significantly to accidents.

The goal is to foster a culture of safe driving and responsible road use through consistent and rigorous enforcement.
