The Finnish fireworks team claimed the championship of the 2024 Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) after beating its Chinese rival in the final round of the annual competition in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang on Saturday.

The competition between Chinese and Finnish pyrotechnic teams had been expected as their eye-catching performances wowed tourists and residents in Da Nang two weeks earlier.

China, with its long-standing fireworks industry, excited and overwhelmed viewers at the beginning of the performance.

However, smoke later interfered with the lighting effects of the performance.

The team's strength lay in their innovative music, which blended elements of Chinese and Western styles.

Meanwhile, the Finnish team used some 10,000 firecrackers, double that of its Chinese opponent, to light up the sky over Da Nang City.

In addition to high- and medium-altitude fireworks, the team showed underwater fireworks display techniques.

Winning the first place, the Finnish team received a prize of US$20,000 from the organizer, while the Chinese runner-up earned $10,000.

Artist Ho Dinh Nam Kha, a member of the panel of judges, said both teams were excellent.

However, the Finnish team’s performance was more impressive with outstanding arrangement, colors, and music.

The organizer also awarded the prize of ‘Most Creative of DIFF 2024’ to the French team and the prize of ‘People’s Choice of DIFF 2024’ to the Italian team with a value of $5,000 each.

Tickets for the final round of the festival were sold out over 10 days before the event.

Hotels and yachts were fully booked as well, proving the attractiveness of the final round of this year’s DIFF.

Thousands of spectators thronged the two banks of the Han River to admire the fireworks shows.

DIFF 2024, which took place between June 8 and July 13, featured performances by seven international pyrotechnic teams from France, Italy, the U.S., Germany, Poland, China, Finland, and a team from Da Nang.

The first DIFF edition was held in 2008.
