D.T. is now enjoying a new chapter of his life following his quick recovery from a heart transplant performed at Hue Central Hospital in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam.

The hospital on Tuesday announced the successful discharge of T., its 13th heart transplant patient as yet.

The patient had previously spent months in intensive care being treated for cardiomyopathy.

After the heart transplantation, his health re-stabilized and he has since been able to return home.

T.’s donor was 36-year-old L.T.S. from Ha Nam Province in northern Vietnam.

S. was admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi following a brain hemorrhage which sent him into convulsions, a coma, and cardiac arrest.

He was declared brain-dead after nine days of treatment and his family consented to donating his heart to save another life.

A medical team from Hue Central Hospital was immediately dispatched to Hanoi, about 660km away, to retrieve the heart and transport it back to the province's Hue City, where T. was waiting in critical condition.

A moment of silence was held for S. in honor of his and his family’s sacrifice prior to the removal of his heart and other organs.

In just four hours and 30 minutes, by 1:52 pm on October 26, the donor heart was beating in T.’s chest.

Professor Pham Nhu Hiep, director at Hue Central Hospital, said this was a record-breaking transplant. From the placement of the heart to its first beat was just 50 minutes.

Medical staff at both hospitals celebrated as the heart resumed beating in the recipient’s chest.

Dang The Uyen, deputy head of the cardiovascular center at Hue Central Hospital, said that this heart transplantation was completed quickly thanks to advanced techniques that accelerated recovery.

Three days after the procedure, T.’s health was back to normal and he could eate as well as take care of himself, Uyen added.

It also ranks second nationwide in overall organ transplantation, having performed more than 2,000 procedures, including tissue, organ, and stem cell transplants.
