Tech In Asia closes Vietnamese site 9 months after launch

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 20:23 GMT+7

Tech In Asia has shut down its Vietnamese version and is merging it with the main English-language website in order to “focus on other aspects of Vietnam.”

The news site that covers technology and startups in Asia informed its readers of the official shutdown of the Vietnamese version in a post published Monday on its website, www.techinasia.vn, but did not give any clear reason.

“Over the past year, we have done our best to bring you valuable readers the best coverage and articles about the startup community in Vietnam,” reads the last post on the website.

“After a year, we decided to shut down our Vietnamese-language website and will focus on other aspects of Vietnam, based on which we can join hands to build and nourish the startup ecosystem in Vietnam.”

The website currently remains accessible, with a notice reading “We are merging with our family site (www.techinasia.com).”

Launched in December last year, techinasia.vn is known as a website that provides useful posts and insights by the Vietnamese startup community.

The unexpected demise of the site has thus left its frequent readers in shock.

Nhie Bowl, whose Facebook page says he is working as a PR and account executive at the Viet Youth Entrepreneurs, commented below the closedown announcement that he had to “check the calendar to ensure that it is not an April Fool’s Day joke.”

Another reader, commenting under the Facebook name of Son Dang, expressed his regret to bid farewell to a website “with high-quality posts that can hardly be found these days.”

The people behind Tech In Asia are a crew of journalists and bloggers with a culture and passion for new ways of delivering tech and startup news.

Their mission is to “share with the world and our regional audiences on the latest happenings in Asia’s tech and startup scene.”

Besides covering tech news, they also hold events like the Startup Asia conference.

Among the members of the Vietnamese website team are managing director Anh-Minh Do and event organizer Thanh-Ha Trinh.

The English-languge website of Tech In Asia was set up as Penn Olson in July 2009 and was rebranded as its current name in March 2012.
