Many enterprises are buying large numbers of mooncakes to give to their staff and partners, showing signs of hope for huge mooncake sales for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

Though mooncake sales were predicted to shrink this year due to weak economic health, several mooncake makers have seen growing demand from companies.

Mooncakes are commonly given as a gift during the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam.

Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the 'Children’s Festival,' takes place on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. This year, it falls on Friday, September 29.

Nguyen Dinh Chung, sales director at Mondelez Kinh Do Vietnam, said on Tuesday that companies’ mooncake purchases are on the rise.

Enterprises often place orders early, and make up about 80 percent of mooncake sales.

“Through a recent customer conference featuring the participation of some 500 distributors, we saw that many firms set aside part of their budget to buy mooncakes for their employees,” Chung said.

“We are offering various options to satisfy customers."

As planned, Mondelez Kinh Do will be producing 20-25 million mooncakes with 70 flavors and 25 designs for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

A representative of Savouré Bakery said that to meet the demand of consumers in the competitive mooncake market, the cake-maker has diversified its products by offering two-mooncake boxes priced at over VND360,000 (US$15.1) each, depending on weight and flavor.

Kido Group is set to produce 450 metric tons of mooncakes to serve consumers during this year’s festival.

The mooncake market has become fiercely competitive due to online sales and homemade mooncakes, said many firms.

Various mooncake makers are cautious about their production because of ongoing economic challenges.

Some hotels such as the Reverie Saigon and the Windsor Plaza are offering discounts of up to 30 percent on early orders.
