Ho Chi Minh City plans to start work on five or six more social housing projects, comprising a total of approximately 6,000 apartments, by the end of April 2025, said a city official.

From now until April 30 next year, the southern metropolis will focus on resolving challenges and completing procedures to kick off these projects, Bui Xuan Cuong, vice-chairman of the municipal administration, said while addressing a ground-breaking ceremony for the Le Thanh Tan Kien social housing project in the outlying district of Binh Chanh last week.

As the city is adjusting its urban development scheme through 2040, authorities will revise housing development plans to attract more social housing developers.

Cuong underlined the need of developing adequate infrastructure facilities, creating a livable environment, and enhancing the quality of life for residents and workers during the implementation of social housing projects.

He expressed his belief that quality social homes would help promote social welfare and encourage more workers to come to the city.

The city’s administration will join hands with relevant agencies to complete legal and regulatory processes for both commercial and social housing projects, with a focus on removing bottlenecks hampering the renovation of aging apartment buildings and homes along rivers and canals, and reducing red tape to boost investors’ participation in housing projects, the vice-chairman added.

At the ceremony, Pham Minh Man, deputy director of the city's Department of Construction, highlighted that social housing policies, particularly for low-income residents, have consistently been a top priority for both the central government and city authorities.

The southern hub had earlier set a target to build 69,700-93,000 social homes by 2030.

As a result, the city already put two social housing projects with 118 apartments into use during the 2006-10 period, completed 10 projects with 3,700 units in 2011-15, and 19 projects with 15,000 units in 2016-20.

Since 2021, the construction department has launched six social housing projects, totaling 2,700 apartments, while four other projects with 3,000 units are under construction.

Man disclosed that Le Thanh Construction Trading Co. Ltd. has been responsible for developing many social housing projects across the city, including the Le Thanh Tan Kien development on Nguyen Cuu Street in Binh Chanh's Tan Kien Commune.

The project, which is slated for completion by 2026, will feature four 18-story apartment blocks and two commercial service blocks.

Spanning a total construction area of approximately 127,000 square meters, with 47,000 square meters allocated to commercial services, the development will offer 1,445 social housing units.

These units, each ranging from 45 to 50 square meters, will be available for 49-year leases.
