Benh Zeitlin’s “Beasts of the Southern Wilds,” the movie which was nominated for four Oscars at the 85th Academy Awards in February, will be showcased on local screens from June 14.
The 2012 American fantasy-drama film, adapted by Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar from Alibar's one-act play Juicy and Delicious, tells the story of a 5-year-old orphan named Hushpuppy and how she struggles to survive after a terrible storm kills her foster father and leaves her among the rubble and an army of Prehistoric monsters called Aurochs.
The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress. Quvenzhané Wallis, who played Hushpuppy, became the youngest Best Actress nominee in history.
The film has received positive critical reviews and won numerous awards, including the Caméra d'Or award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and Best Director at the Seattle International Film Festival. Its script also won the 2012 Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
