Photos of legendary general Vo Nguyen Giap which are taken by a local army officer are being showcased in Ho Chi Minh City until Jan 18.
The exhibit, running at HCMC Women’s Cultural House, features 40 photos taken of General Giap by Colonel Doan Hoai Trung.
The photos, taken from Trung’s 99 ones in his recently-launched photo book “General Vo Nguyen Giap in my heart”, capture the elderly general when he returned to the Dien Bien Phu battleground, which boasts Vietnam’ most momentous military triumph during the country’s resistance war from 1945 to 1954 against the French troops.
The photos also depict Gen. Giap in intimate moments with his soldiers and his family and during meetings with journalists and military attachés from other countries.
In the same vein, local singer Trang Nhung recently released an album titled “In loving memory of General Vo Nguyen Giap”, with seven songs which she herself composed. The songs extol General Giap and describe her and others’ emotions upon hearing the general’s death.
Vo Nguyen Giap, the first four-star general and the former commander-in-chief of the Vietnam army, died in Hanoi on Oct 4, 2013, more than a month after he celebrated his 103rd birthday.
He started his career as a history teacher before joining the army to become a most revered general who led the Vietnam Army to defeat the French and US invaders in 1954 and 1975 respectively.
His funeral, the largest in Vietnam for decades, attracted thousands of locals who queued for several hours to pay tribute to the general. People are still visiting his resting place in Quang Binh province.
