An exhibition featuring an expat Vietnamese artist’s paintings of legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap in his everyday moments is taking place in Hanoi and will close at the end of next week.

The exhibit is being organized at the Vietnam Military History Museum from Tuesday to Sunday next week.

The museum is located at 28A Dien Bien Phu Street in Ba Dinh District.

On display are around 40 sketches and 10 oil paintings of late General Giap created by expat Vietnamese artist Van Duong Thanh.

Several of them were done some 20 years ago, while some others were created during Thanh’s visit to the general at his home in 1999.

Many are dated specifically and feature General Giap’s autographs.

Also featured are three sketches created by General Giap of artist Thanh and the expat Vietnamese’s two paintings of the general’s wife.

The event is jointly organized by the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, Association for Liaison with Overseas Vietnamese, EAS Vietnam, which is a local company, and artist Thanh.

After closing, the exhibition will be taken to the central province of Quang Binh, General Giap’s hometown, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Vo Nguyen Giap, the first four-star general and the former commander-in-chief of the Vietnamese army, passed away on October 4, 2013 in Hanoi, aged 102.

Born in 1911 in Quang Binh in the central region of Vietnam, he started his career as a history teacher before joining the army to become the legendary general who led it to defeat French and U.S. invaders in 1954 and 1975 respectively.

He directly commanded major operations including Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and Ho Chi Minh in 1975.

General Giap served as Deputy Prime Minister and National Defense Minister since national reunification in 1975 until 1980.

From 1981 to 1991, he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
