Vietnamese photographer Thai Phien has launched his second nude exhibition, putting on show 102 photos printed on stones for a whole week in Ho Chi Minh City.

The exhibition, themed “Hon da” (The Soul of Stones), runs from October 19 to 26 at the Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Association, at 218A Pasteur Street in District 3.

Phien’s second exhibition comes more than a year after the first event was held in the southern metropolis in June 2018.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, the artist’s nudes are displayed on an uncommon “canvas” – stones.

Thai Phien told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that he and his partners went all the way to streams in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong and the south-central province of Phu Yen to handpick stones for the exhibition.

The stones come in multiple shapes and sizes, measuring 0.4-0.9 meters high and weighing between five and 70 kilograms each.

Chosen stones were then painted black, according to the news site Zing.

Phien chose 102 nude photos from his published photo books “Mien co tich” (Fairyland) and “Xuan thi” (Young Age) for printing on the selected stones.

Some of the photos on display have never been introduced to the public before, he said.

“The shape of each stone is one-of-a-kind, just like the unique beauty of every woman,” the 59-year-old photographer said.

As each work in the collection is the only one of its kind, Phien’s displayed artworks are offered for sale for up to dozens of million Vietnamese dongs. (US$1 = VND23,256)

Thai Phien, well-known throughout Vietnam, is a member of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) and listed on the "Who's Who?" of the Photographic Society of America (PSA).

He has received 52 prizes, both local and international, over the course of his decades-long career.

About 300 of his works have been selected for exhibitions in more than 60 countries around the world.

This is only Phien’s second exhibition in his 27-year career in photography.
