While Christmas is a time for celebrations and family gatherings, groups of people from different backgrounds in Ho Chi Minh City have had their thoughts on those in need on this occasion.

One of the groups consists of volunteers from Cao Thang Technical College in District 1.

With a kind heart and compassion, the volunteers scouted many streets in the southern metropolis to bring hot meals and new clothes to homeless people.

“Our group usually sets out at midnight when the underprivileged begin their nightlife,” Bui Minh Thong, a 20-year-old member that has been involved with the volunteer group for two years, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

“Although what we give them are only a meal box and a piece of clothing, we hope that those things will keep them warm on the inside.”

Likewise, a group led by 30-year-old Minh Tuyen carried more than 50 gift sets containing milk cartons, bread, and instant noodles to street people on Phan Van Tri Street in Go Vap District.

“Each of us chipped in a little and handed out the gifts together. We do not think much of it,” said Tuyen.

Meanwhile, a group of students from the Ho Chi Minh University of Education spent the whole Monday cooking porridge before delivering the food to poor people on Phan Dang Luu Street in Binh Thanh District later in the night.

“This bowl [of porridge] is so delicious. I’m stuffed,” Huynh Tan Loi, a 71-year-old man, told Tuoi Tre.
