Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz was welcomed by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on Thursday morning as part of his official friendship visit to Vietnam from Wednesday to Sunday.

PM Cruz and his high-ranking delegation arrived at Noi Bai International Airport in the Vietnamese capital on Wednesday night.

This is his first visit to a country outside Latin America since he took office in December 2019, and also the first to Vietnam by a high-ranking Cuban leader since 2018, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Following the welcome ceremony on Thursday morning, PM Cruz and PM Chinh joined talks to discuss the relationship between their two countries.

During his stay in Vietnam, the Cuban leader is also expected to meet with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

He will attend the Vietnam - Cuba business forum, visit several popular places in Ho Chi Minh City, and meet leaders of the southern metropolis.

Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 2, 1960, nearly two years after the success of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959.

The two sides maintain regular exchanges and visits of delegations at all levels, with the most recent visit to Cuba by a Vietnamese leader conducted by State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc in September 2021.

The good political relations between the two countries have created momentum for cooperation in economic matters, trade, investment, agriculture, and COVID-19 response.
