Vietnam supports repeal of embargo against Cuba

Vietnam is in favor of ending the longstanding economic embargo against Cuba, Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong said at a reception for Roberto Morales Ojeda, Politburo member and permanent member of the Secretariat of Cuba’s Communist Party Central Committee, on Wednesday afternoon.

President Thuong underlined that the Vietnamese government and the Communist Party of Vietnam attach much significance to the friendship with Cuba,the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The relationship between the two nations plays a key political role in deepening their multifaceted cooperation, he added.

The state leader affirmed that Vietnam will stand alongside Cuba to overcome difficulties and challenges caused by the embargo, natural disasters, and fires.

Vietnam is willing to share hardships with Cuba and strengthen the solidarity and partnership between the two nations, said the state president.

President Thuong also proposed that the two sides improve the efficiency of their bilateral ties in various fields based on their strengths, potential, and close political relations.

The Cuban representative expressed his gratitude to the Vietnamese government, the Party, and the Vietnamese people for their support.

Ojeda also stressed that Cuba was willing to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese firms to do business in the country.

Echoing President Thuong, Ojeda said that the two nations should continue to strengthen their friendship which began with a bond formed between late President Ho Chi Minh and late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

President Thuong also used the meeting to send greetings from Vietnamese Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong to Cuban revolution leader Raul Castro as well as extend an invitation to the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel for a visit to Vietnam in 2023.

The Vietnamese state leader also said that he plans to visit Cuba.

Boosted cooperation

The Communist Party of Vietnam and the Communist Party of Cuba on Wednesday joined hands to hold the fifth theoretical conference titled 'Theoretical and practical issues on the development of socialism in Vietnam and Cuba.'

The conference featured the high-ranking officials of the two Parties and the two nations’ department and ministry leaders and theoretical experts.

The conference ended in success, Ojeda said, adding that the event demonstrated the solidarity and special relations between the two Parties.

After the meeting, Nguyen Xuan Thang, chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and head of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, greeted Rosario Penton Diaz, director of Cuba’s Nico Lopez Party School.

The Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Cuba’s Nico Lopez Party School renewed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation for the 2023-28 period.
