Chairman of Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly (NA) Vuong Dinh Hue presided over a welcome ceremony for and held talks with Japanese President of the House of Councilors Otsuji Hidehisa in Hanoi on Tuesday afternoon.

Otsuji Hidehisa pays an official visit to Vietnam from Monday to Thursday this week at the invitation of NA Chairman Hue.

This is also his first visit to this Southeast Asian nation since he assumed power in August last year.

During their talks, the top Vietnamese legislator affirmed that the visit has significant meaning as it takes place at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

NA Chairman Hue added that the visit will help facilitate the cooperation between the two legislative bodies, paving the way for consolidating the good friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The Vietnamese NA and people congratulated Japan on maintaining its political stability, obtaining many socio-economic achievements, taking the lead in multiple fields, and elevating its position on the global and regional stage.

The Japanese upper house chief thanked Chairman Hue for the warm welcome, saying that Japan attaches great importance to its ties with Vietnam.

Otsuji also took this occasion to express his thanks to the Vietnamese government and NA for donating medical face masks to Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The leader of the Japanese House of Councilors pledged further support to strengthen the Vietnam-Japan ties in all fields.

Since the establishment of the Vietnam-Japan extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia in 2014, their bilateral relations have reaped fruitful results with high political trust, according to the two officials at the talks.

Vietnam endorses the upgrade of bilateral ties to a greater height, Chairman Hue said and suggested that both sides continue to enhance cooperation and mutual support at important multilateral forums of which Vietnam and Japan are members, such as the UN, ASEAN, and APEC.

He also proposed both nations strengthen the strategic connectivity between their economies based on their high political trust and much room left for further growth.

Accordingly, Japan supports Vietnam in developing an independent and self-reliant economy which can effectively engage in global supply chains.

He suggested Japan continue to offer official development assistance (ODA) loans for Vietnam to execute socio-economic projects to meet sustainable development goals, in addition to launching new-generation ODA programs in the Southeast Asian country with more incentives and simplified, flexible procedures.
