The United States will keep boosting support for developing countries, including Vietnam, in response to climate change, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry said on Saturday.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh hosted a reception in Hanoi on Saturday afternoon for Kerry, who is on a working visit to Vietnam.

As a long-lasting friend of Vietnam, Kerry affirmed that he will throw his weight behind the stronger cooperation between the two nations in the fight against climate change to back Vietnam’s efforts in fulfilling its commitments made at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Scotland in 2021.

The United States attaches much significance to the relationship with Vietnam and supports the latter’s proactive role in the region as well as in dealing with international issues, including climate change.

Washington highly values Hanoi’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the U.S. climate envoy underlined.

Kerry also said that the United States will enhance cooperation with Vietnam in developing clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, and smart water source management, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Welcoming Kerry back to Vietnam on the occasion of U.S. President Joe Biden’s two-day visit scheduled for Sunday and Monday, Prime Minister Chinh proposed the U.S. climate envoy and the United States call on many international organizations to initiate various projects to battle climate change in Vietnam, including enhancing the fight against land subsidence in the Mekong Delta and accelerating clean energy transition.

The Vietnamese premier appreciated the efforts from President Biden and climate envoy Kerry in raising global awareness of the battle against climate change.

Vietnam is striving to reach a net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, and is working to follow the Just Energy Transition Partnership.

The country has issued the National Power Development Plan VIII, said PM Chinh.

Vietnam boasts much wind and sunshine for the development of renewable energy, so the nation is elevating its clean energy industry, said the top Vietnamese official.
