Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Lee Ka-chiu will pay a visit to Vietnam from July 31 to August 2, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The three-day visit will be made at the invitation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang, the foreign ministry said on Monday.
This will be the first visit to Vietnam by Lee, a 67-year-old Hong Kong politician who was elected HKSAR chief executive on May 8, 2022 and took office on July 1 the same year.
According to Hong Kong’s The Standard newspaper, the visit is aimed at increasing high-level contacts and promoting economic and trade exchanges between the HKSAR and Vietnam.
More than 30 business representatives and officials in the fields of innovation, technology, trade, industry, finance, logistics, and tourism will accompany Lee during this visit.
During his stay in Vietnam, the HKSAR leader will hold talks with Deuty PM Quang and have important meetings with other key Vietnamese leaders, the ministry said.
The guest will also engage in various activities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the southern economic hub of Vietnam.
As one of the largest financial, commercial, and transportation centers in the world, the HKSAR is also considered a gateway connecting investment, trade, finance, and logistics services between China and the region as well as the world.
Hong Kong, as an economy, has participated in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum and is one of Vietnam’s important economic, trade, and investment partners.
Currently, Hong Kong is Vietnam's seventh-largest trading partner and its fifth-largest foreign direct investor, while Vietnam is Hong Kong’s second-biggest trading partner in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
