Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse will pay a state visit to China from August 18 to 20 at the invitation of Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping and his spouse.
This will be the Vietnamese leader’s first visit to China since he took office as Vietnam’s Party chief on August 3.
The 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam elected him as general secretary for the 2021-26 term at a meeting on the same day.
The Chinese leader sent congratulations to State President To Lam on his election as the Vietnamese Party chief.
Xi underlined that he was willing to join Party General Secretary To Lam in leading the building of a China-Vietnam community with a shared future, jointly promoting their traditional friendship, consolidating political trust, deepening strategic exchanges, and boosting substantive cooperation.
During the upcoming China visit, the Vietnamese leader is set to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi.
This will be the first time for the two leaders to directly meet each other since the top Vietnamese official took on the new position.
Party chief and President Lam will also meet several top Chinese officials and attend a series of key activities in Beijing and Guangzhou.
The visit takes place when the Vietnam - China ties are thriving strongly.
The two nations will celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.
Their in-depth partnership in the economic, trade, and investment fields has become one of the highlights of the bilateral ties over the past many years.
China is Vietnam’s largest trade partner, and the latter’s second-biggest buyer.
Meanwhile, Vietnam is China’s biggest trade partner in Southeast Asia and its fifth-largest trade partner in the world, after the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Russia.
In 2023, two-way trade amounted to US$171.9 billion.
The total export and import value between the two countries reached over $77 billion in the first five months of 2024.
Over the past few years, Vietnam and China have entered multiple bilateral and multilateral agreements such as the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
China is working to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Vietnam is one of the CPTPP members.
The Vietnamese leader’s visit is expected to further cement bilateral ties, especially in the political aspect, and to create more cooperation opportunities to bring benefits to the two nations, their peoples, and the region.
