Vietnam megacity speeds up ratification of $93mn Thu Thiem square, park project

Vietnam megacity speeds up ratification of $93mn Thu Thiem square, park project

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has just issued an urgent dispatch to urge the municipal People’s Council – the local equivalent of the law-making National Assembly – to approve a gigantic project to build a large square and a riverside park at an estimated cost of VND1.97 trillion (nearly US$93 million). The two components will be constructed on an over-28-hectare site in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area in District 2, according to a city plan. The committee asked in the dispatch that the People’s Council ratify the project soon so that the construction of the square can be completed at the same time with four main traffic routes that broke ground in the area in February this year. As the square and the park are designed to border the routes, the uniform construction of these facilities and the roads will help cut costs, save time, and reduce environmental impacts during the implementation of the project, the committee said.  The project will be carried out in the BT (Build-Transfer) form and is expected to complete after 36 months of construction. According to their layouts, the square will sit on a 20.7 hectare land plot while the park will cover 7.97 hectares. Upon its completion, the square will be the largest of its kind in Vietnam, the committee said. The project’s consultant is Defrain Souquet Deso Associates, a French company. The square and the park, located along the Saigon River, will be used as an ideal place for organizing large political, social, and cultural events. With abundant greenery, they will also serve as recreational and relaxation areas for the public. The Investment and Construction Management Board of the Thu Thiem New Urban Area is coordinating with the French consultant to finalize a detailed (1/500) construction plan for the square and the park. When available, the plan will be submitted to the People’s Committee for approval, the board said.
