Boy, 5, dies after falling into unfenced construction pit in Vietnam

A five-year-old boy has died after falling into an unfenced construction pit in north-central Vietnam.

The pit is part of a construction site at an infrastructure development project north of the Hieu River in Dong Ha City, the capital of Quang Tri Province.

The boy, H.Q.T., was the youngest son of a family residing in a nearby neighborhood.

According to T.’s father, the boy and a neighborhood friend were playing near the construction site, 200 meters from their home, on Sunday morning.

At around 9:00 am, Ho Sy Vinh, a local passerby, reportedly heard T.’s friend crying out for help, saying that his friend had fallen into a pit filled with water.

The pit was part of an unfinished sewage discharge system, measuring four meters long, two meters wide and 1.8 meters deep.

Vinh jumped into the pit to get T. out and, along with other locals, brought the boy to the nearest hospital, where he would tragically draw his last breath.

According to local police, there was no fence or any type of barrier around the pit at the time of the incident.

One of the construction workers involved in the project said the pit was normally dry, and that the water inside had come from a nearby irrigation ditch.

The construction project is developed and monitored by Quang Tri Center for Land Reserve Development, with Dong Ha City-based Manh Linh Constructions the main contractor.
