A police officer found himself clinging for dear life on the hood of a speeding taxi after attempting to fine the driver for a traffic violation in Hanoi.
The incident occurred around 9:00 am on Wednesday in Soc Son District, Hanoi and was filmed by a passer-by.
In the 20-second long video, a Mai Linh cab appears to be traveling at high speed down an expressway connecting the Vietnamese capital with the northern province of Thai Nguyen, hauling a police officer along for the ride.
The video was shot from behind the cab and the officer’s legs can be seen dangling over the right side of the vehicle.
The footage quickly went viral after being uploaded to social media.
Commentors on the video post seemed in relative agreement that the cab driver’s actions were reprehensible due to the danger posed to the officer.
According to N.T.T., who shot the video, bystanders signaled for the taxi driver to stop the car, but their efforts were in vain.
Another officer in pursuit of the cab was unable to catch the vehicle, T. continued.
“We did manage to get in front of the taxi but the vehicle later rammed the back of our car as we attempted to block the road,” the woman added.
A police official in Soc Son District told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the officer in the footage was a member of a unit tasked with keeping social order.
As the taxi was illegally parked, the officer and his team asked the driver to present his license and other documents.
The cabbie, however, chose not to cooperate and attempted to make an escape, catching the officer on the hood of his car in the process.
The driver eventually pulled over and the police officer was unharmed.
The offender was summoned to the police station on Wednesday evening, the police official said.
