Vietnamese doctors have succeeded in replanting the nearly-detached hand of a woman overnight, bringing her an opportunity to regain the full use of the arm.
Bui Thi Hong was taken on the night of March 29 to the medical center on the Bach Long Vy Island, the offshore district of Hai Phong City, while about two-thirds of one of her hands were cut off from the wrist by a pane of glass.
The skin on the back of the hand came off, all tendons to the related fingers broke, and the bone of the arm-wrist area was damaged.
Doctors spent three hours repairing the tendons, muscles and performing a surgery on the wrist, and the patient was safe following the procedure.
With the hand seen to be in a good condition after a day, the woman was referred to a hospital in the mainland for further special care.
Pham Hai, a doctor at the center, said that only three doctors work at the facility but it has admitted a large number of patients, most of whom were fishermen having accidents at sea.
