The number of dengue fever cases is increasing in multiple localities across Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City and the central city of Da Nang, sparking concern over a fresh outbreak of the dangerous disease.
Statistics showed that the majority of patients infected with the mosquito-borne tropical disease are children above six years old.
According to Nguyen Tan Nam, a senior doctor at the Ho Chi Minh City Children’s Hospital, the number of dengue fever patients at the infirmary started rising about a month ago and is currently at a rather high ratio, about five to 10 cases per day.
Meanwhile, at the Children’s Hospital 2, the number of such cases in August doubled that of the previous month.
The situation continued intensifying in the first two weeks of September.
The Preventive Medicine Center in Dong Nai Province said it had recorded nearly 3,500 cases of dengue fever since the beginning of this year.
Bien Hoa City and Nhon Trach District are among the localities with the highest number of patients.
“We will start implementing measures to prevent an outbreak, namely eradicating mosquitoes and their larvae, in the coming time,” said Dr. Bach Thai Binh, director of the provincial preventive medicine center.
As the situation is also becoming serious in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, authorities have launched several campaigns to raise awareness of the disease among locals and supplied more medicine to aid the treatment of those infected.
In Da Nang, more than 2,000 cases have been recorded so far in 2018. A sharp rise was noticed in July, August, and early September, which are within the rainy season.
Over the past month, the city’s healthcare sector has been spraying mosquito repellent at about 200 locations where an epidemic could potentially occur.
In nearby Quang Nam Province, about 50 to 60 people have been admitted to local hospitals for dengue fever treatment on a weekly basis since August.
Authorities warned that the number will keep rising in the near future and have taken preventive measures across the province.
