A high school teacher in the southern Vietnamese province of Kien Giang has been arrested and probed for copulating with an under-16-year-old person after he was recently accused of repeatedly having sex with and impregnating a tenth-grade school girl.

Colonel Luu Thanh Tin, deputy director of the provincial Department of Police, confirmed on Monday that officers had initiated legal proceedings against Nguyen Van Chinh, 55, who teaches math at Soc Son High School in Hon Dat District.

Chinh will be held in custody for four months to assist his investigation.

The family of Tran Hong Th., who is currently in 11th grade, previously accused Chinh of manipulating Th., who was under 16 years old as of May 2018, into having sex with him.

In his report submitted to local authorities last month, the teacher also admitted he and Th. had been involved in a romantic relationship for more than a year.

According to Chinh, Th. was the first to make a move when she texted him a holiday greeting message on Reunification Day (April 30) in 2018.

After that day, the two began exchanging text messages and going out, he said.

They had their first sexual intercourse in May the same year, the teacher claimed.

Th. found out she had got pregnant in December last year, and Chinh took her to a local clinic to have an abortion at a cost of VND27 million (US$1,164).

After the incident, they continued dating and having sex until Th.’s family recently found out about their relationship.

In early November this year, Th. posted a hand-written letter to her Facebook account, claiming she had been in a voluntary romantic relationship with Chinh.

The young girl also attached some of their intimate photos.
