A man from the northern Vietnamese city of Hai Phong has been arrested for allegedly murdering his creditor and burning the victim’s body.

The municipal Department of Police confirmed on Sunday they had taken into custody Pham Ngoc Tuan, 25, who resides in An Duong District, to assist their investigation.

Tuan is the prime suspect in the murder of Nguyen Van Lam, 27, another resident of An Duong District.

According to preliminary information and the suspect’s statement, Lam came to Tuan’s house on Saturday evening and demanded that Tuan pay up.

The suspect did not pay the money but instead stabbed Lam to death.

He then put the victim’s body into a barrel and set the corpse on fire with gasoline.

After the murder, Tuan caught a coach to the northern province of Son La, about 400 kilometers west of Hai Phong.

Local residents found the body later on the same day and reported their finding to police officers.

Hai Phong police, in coordination with their counterparts in Son La Province, were able to locate the suspect and capture him on Sunday morning.

Further investigation is ongoing.
