Northern Vietnam is forecast to enter the coldest period of the season next week due to the effect of a cold snap, with frost expected to cover the tops of high mountains in the region.
The northern provinces will remain dry and sunny during daytime and chilly at night until the end of this week, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
Average temperatures will range from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius.
A strong cold front will move into the region next Monday, resulting in showers and a drop in temperature.
It will be cold and wet on Monday and Tuesday before becoming dry and frigid from Wednesday.
This is expected to be the coldest period of the season so far, with lows falling to 13-15 degrees Celsius, the weather center assessed, adding that the highest temperature during the day will not exceed 22 degrees Celsius.
In mountainous areas, mercury may dip to below seven degrees Celsius, resulting in frost on such high mountains as Mau Son, Dong Van, and Fansipan.
Local residents, especially the elderly and children, are advised to make preparations to protect themselves from the chilly weather, as a sudden drop in temperature can cause various respiratory diseases.
Farmers in mountainous localities should take certain measures to protect their plants and livestock from the cold.
The weather pattern is likely to recur between December and February, Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, stated, adding that the 2021-22 winter will be colder than the 2020-21 period.
From now until the end of the year, Vietnam is expected to be hit by one or two more storms or tropical depressions, Lam continued.
People in central and south-central provinces should also prepare for medium to heavy rains from now until mid-December, the official warned.
