Police in Hoang Mai District, Hanoi announced on Saturday the pilot of a ‘xe om’ (motorbike taxi) service to help people who have consumed alcohol return home safely from beer parlors.
The ‘xe om’ team will include beer parlor employees, who will connect their drunk customers with ride-hailing motorbike riders for free.
On Saturday morning, police officers of Dinh Cong Ward in the same district gave out leaflets and banners advertising the pilot program and the phone number of the ‘xe om’ team to beer and karaoke parlors in the locality.
“We set up a group of motorbike taxi drivers to bring drunk people home in order to reduce traffic accidents and ensure the safety of people,” said a police leader.
The Hoang Mai District police division expects to hand out as many leaflets as possible to 160 beer restaurants in all 14 wards across the district.
Chu Duy Thinh, the owner of a local beer shop, hailed the initiative is helpful for people.
“I often tell my customers if they get drunk, we will call the motorbike taxi team or have our staff take them home to ensure safety,” Thinh said.
In Vietnam, a new law on drunk driving took effect on January 1, 2020, stipulating that drivers must be completely sober while operating bicycles, motorbikes, automobiles, and any other vehicles on roads.
