Heavy rains and thunderstorms are forecast to strike many provinces in north-central and central Vietnam over the next few days, posing a high risk of flash floods and landslides.
Medium to heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms have been battering the localities from north-central Thua Thien-Hue Province to central Quang Ngai Province since Sunday, Dinh Phung Bao, director of the central hydro-meteorological station, said on Monday morning.
The average rainfall in the region was measured at 40-200 millimeters within the 24-hour period from 1:00 am on Sunday to 1:00 am on Monday, Bao elaborated.
Areas with the highest rain volume included Hoa Ninh Commune in Da Nang City, Bach Ma Mountain, and Huong Phu Commune in Thua Thien-Hue Province.
Medium to heavy rains are expected to continue lashing provinces in north-central and central Vietnam over the next 24-48 hours.
From Quang Binh Province to Quang Tri Province, heavy downpours will fall on Monday and will decrease in intensity starting Tuesday.
Meanwhile, torrential rains in the localities from Thua Thien-Hue Province to Quang Ngai Province will last until the end of Tuesday.
Water levels of local rivers will rise rapidly and result in inundation in surrounding areas.
The weather also entails a high risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous locales.
Local residents should also watch out for whirlwinds, gusts, and lightning during the rainstorms.
Ships and boats need to take measures to avoid strong winds and big waves.
