A row of rare Sua trees on Nguyen Van Huyen Street in Cau Giay District, Hanoi has been enclosed in iron fences for over four years, hampering their growth.
The Sua tree, scientifically known as dalbergia tonkinensis, is a species of legume in the Fabaceae family.
The trees are currently being strangled by metal enclosures around their trunks, causing both their trunks and limbs to rot.
“I feel heartbroken as these trees are damaged and dying,” said Nguyen Van Tuan, a 35-year-old resident of Cau Giay District.
“They are unable to grow naturally because they are caged,” he explained, adding that he hoped local authorities would consider removing the cages and provide rehabilitative care for the trees.
A representative from the Technical Infrastructure Management Center under the municipal Department of Construction told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the unit had planned to dispatch staff to the street to evaluate the situation and health of the trees.

In 2020, during the construction of an overpass at the intersection of Hoang Quoc Viet Street and Nguyen Van Huyen Street, the municipal department appointed the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Board of Hanoi, the project’s investor, to care for and relocate over 100 trees along the affected section of Nguyen Van Huyen.
Among the over 100 trees were 34 Sua plants, considered a rare and valuable plant species.
After being relocated, these trees were enclosed in order to prevent people from cutting them down illegally.
The investor also installed cameras in the area to better monitor the trees.
As such, the trees have remained in their cages for the past four years.
