Deputy chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Thi Thang has agreed to the city's project to open a night food street in Phu Nhuan District in December this year.

Thang gave the green light to the establishment of a night-time food street on Phan Xich Long Street at an October 15 meeting, part of the plan to promote the night-time economy in the district.

She made the decision after Phu Nhuan District officials submitted the night-time economy development program to her at the meeting.

She instructed relevant bodies to speed up the process so that the plan can be implemented in December.

The vice-chairwoman urged Phu Nhuan authorities to coordinate with other departments in finalizing the draft project before submitting it to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade and all agencies concerned in October 2022.

The city administration pointed out that Phu Nhuan District needs to analyze and evaluate the current situation in order to make proposals on spurring the development of the night-time economy.

It is important to know that Truong Sa Street is not eligible for the program, the administration noted.

Phu Nhuan officials need to work closely with Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Company Limited to significantly improve pollution in the area used for the program to avoid negative impacts on locals and visitors.

Thang also ordered the Department of Industry and Trade to conduct a consultation for the project with all relevant units.

The department is required to finish the report and submit it to the People's Committee for a decision by November 15 so that Phu Nhuan District can implement the project by December.

Building a harbor

Prior to the October 15 meeting, the Department of Industry and Trade submitted the project to establish a night food street on Phan Xich Long to the People's Committee for approval

According to the plan, the proposed food street will be set up on the Phan Xich Long section leading to the Rach Mieu residential area and the side streets connected to Phan Xich Long Main Street, Nguyen Cong Hoan Street, and Cu Lao Street, belonging to Ward 1, Ward 2, and Ward 7 in Phu Nhuan District.

As part of the project, electronic vehicles will be the medium of transportation on the night food street while a harbor will be built for canoes and rowing boats in Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal.

The proposed budget for the project is estimated at VND31 billion (US$1.3 million), of which VND1.7 billion ($70,000) will be provided by the government and the rest will come from the private sector.

The project's annual operating cost is projected to be VND500 million ($20,716), which will be covered by enterprises.
