A 27-year-old man was accidentally cut in the throat by a kite string while riding his motorbike near Thu Thiem Bridge in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday, causing a severe wound to his arm tendon and neck.
The patient, Nguyen Van Luy, remains in a coma and is being monitored by doctors at Le Van Thinh Hospital in Thu Duc City, under Ho Chi Minh City, following a surgery to treat wounds on his hand and throat.
The patient's family said that on Monday, at around 4:30 pm, Luy was riding his motorcycle to approach Thu Thiem Bridge in Thu Thiem Ward, Thu Duc City, when he collapsed to the ground after having his throat slashed by a kite string.
Luy's wife, who was following him on another motorbike, stopped and helped him.
After the accident, some kite-flyers rushed to the site and used a lighter and a knife to cut the string off Luy's throat before escaping.
Two of the patient's fingers were also seriously wounded, causing significant bleeding.
The patient was then admitted to Le Van Thinh Hospital for intensive care.
Doctor Kieu Ngoc Minh, deputy director of Le Van Thinh Hospital, stated that the hospital received the male patient with neck and hand injuries caused by a kite string at about 5:00 pm on Monday.
Doctors said that kite strings are primarily made of fabric or wire. Numerous types of kites are intended for flight at great heights, and their strings may be composed of metal-clad wire that is resistant to breaking.
Therefore, unintentional entanglement with pedestrians might easily result in serious injury.
When a kite string accidentally tears the neck, it is vital to wrap the wound with fabric and transport the patient to an emergency medical center immediately.
According to the observation of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, the empty lot near Thu Thiem Bridge on Nguyen Co Thach Street in Thu Thiem Ward, Thu Duc City attracts hundreds of residents to visit and fly kites every afternoon despite several traffic accidents brought about by kite strings.
Relevant authorities frequently patrol and warn people, as well as seize the vehicles of vendors or kite flyers who park on the street, yet kite flying is an unsolved problem in this area.
